Anyone with knowledge of biodiversity collections is welcome to log in and contribute to BCI but this can only happen thanks to the collaboration of institutional supporters. In addition to the three founding organizations, namely GBIF, TDWG and RBGE, several national, regional and international organizations have pledged support to the BCI project as they recognize the value of establishing an index of biodiversity collections.
If you would like to discuss contributing resources please contact admin@BiodiversityCollectionsIndex.org or a representative of the founding organisations.
Supporting organisations recognise the value of establishing a single index of biodiversity collections and publicly support BCI in its aims. Current supporting organisations include:
Atlas of Living Australia
The Atlas of Living Australia is a five-year project funded under the Australian Government's National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).
Its mission is to develop a biodiversity data management system which will link Australia’s biological knowledge with its scientific and agricultural reference collections and other custodians of biological information.
Biodiversity Heritage Library
Ten major natural history museum libraries, botanical libraries, and research institutions have joined to form the Biodiversity Heritage Library Project. The group is developing a strategy and operational plan to digitize the published literature of biodiversity held in their respective collections. This literature will be available through a global “biodiversity commons.”
Natural History Museum (London)
The Natural History Museum is an international leader in the scientific study of the natural world. Our science describes the present diversity of nature, promotes understanding of the critical importance of its past, and develops knowledge that supports anticipation and management of the impact of human activity on the environment.
Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
The National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) is part of the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s preeminent museum and research complex. The Museum is dedicated to inspiring curiosity, discovery, and learning about the natural world through its unparalleled research, collections, exhibitions, and education outreach programs.
BCI also benefits from the support of numerous individuals and projects notably, Index Herbariorum (IH) from The New York Botanical Garden, Insect and Spider Collections of the World (ISCW) from Bishop Museum and Biorepositories.org
If you would like to offer the support of your institution please contact admin@BiodiversityCollectionsIndex.org.
